CoverCove http://covercove.com Get out of the shower... Uncover your talent! Thu, 14 May 2009 23:53:12 +0000 http://wordpress.org/?v=2.2.2 en Thought AI is “Heartless” http://covercove.com/2009/05/15/though-ai-is-heartless/ http://covercove.com/2009/05/15/though-ai-is-heartless/#comments Thu, 14 May 2009 23:42:01 +0000 admin http://covercove.com/2009/05/15/though-ai-is-heartless/ Kanye West never ceases to please me, but this week, “cannon fodder” Kris Allen shocked America by unusing the band, making his voice stand out, accompanied by his acoustic guitar, and singing a cover of a soon-to-be rap anthem. (Sidenote: I just learned about the “cannon fodder” term because of Michael Slezak of Idolatry in EW.com, and it means any soldier who’s dispensable and used to just fill up the troop.) The moment I heard he’s doing “Heartless”, I thought, maybe he was just goofing around since he knew he’d be dispensable, and the judges were very vocal (albeit vulgar, impolite, and disrespectful of Kris) about expecting a Go-bert finalé. First few lines gave a promise of awesomeness, and the rest started a buzz that maybe, just maybe, a “KrAdam” (scary name combo, BTW) finalé isn’t bad at all.

Of course we won’t be showing Kris Allen here. I happen to stumble upon one “Heartless” cover artist, and he sounded good, minus the “just-woke-up-this-morning” pitchiness. I really, genuinely think this also sounded hot!

This one’s closer to the Kris Allen rendition, therefore less original.

So, is it safe to say that any rap song could be stripped down and covered well given an acoustic guitar?

P.S. Because of my sorta wide range of knowledge in music, I got me and my team to win in a game show. It does pay to listen and (painfully) sing some of those songs, haha!

The Only Idol for Me (This Year) http://covercove.com/2009/03/06/the-only-idol-for-me-this-year/ http://covercove.com/2009/03/06/the-only-idol-for-me-this-year/#comments Fri, 06 Mar 2009 01:53:04 +0000 admin http://covercove.com/2009/03/06/the-only-idol-for-me-this-year/ This year’s American Idol is filled with drama (thanks to the crazy guy in Olivia Newton-John headbander and shrieky Tatianna del Toro) and surprises. The worst surprise was not having Anoop to be part of the top 12….

Yet.

Let this remind you of Anoop’s awesome voice. This is ClefHangers’ (his voice group, where he’s soloist) rendition of Brian McKnight’s The Only One for Me.

Not Your Usual Big Top Act http://covercove.com/2009/02/15/not-your-usual-big-top-act/ http://covercove.com/2009/02/15/not-your-usual-big-top-act/#comments Sat, 14 Feb 2009 19:32:27 +0000 admin http://covercove.com/2009/02/15/not-your-usual-big-top-act/ Why is it that when other people cover any Britney Spears song, they do it really good? Always, always better than the original?

I found this cover song of “Circus” by Britney Spears. Dog! The singing is hot, and I personally commend the guitar “acrobatics”. Without further ado, this is TheLetUp’s cover of the hit song.

Where Are You? http://covercove.com/2009/02/08/where-are-you/ http://covercove.com/2009/02/08/where-are-you/#comments Sat, 07 Feb 2009 16:58:41 +0000 admin http://covercove.com/2009/02/08/where-are-you/ Something’s cooking in our stove!

I heard this song from the radio, one midnight while going to a Chinese restaurant. Really sounds nice. So I tried looking for a cover of it from YouTube. There were a bunch of good candidates. But this one, the audience says (or waves) it all… (Video courtesy of mac807)

Part of my ongoing quest to find my “beautiful girl”.

Voice for both was suave. Guy part is easy to make it sound suave, so I decided which girl sang it the best. Charmagne Chi won.

Apart from the annoying background noises from the one who camcorded the moment, I think it’s a trend these days to have the guitar confused over the overall tone of the song. Simple is enough. A little strumming would do it, I guess.

CoverCove’s Back http://covercove.com/2009/02/07/covercoves-back/ http://covercove.com/2009/02/07/covercoves-back/#comments Sat, 07 Feb 2009 10:45:22 +0000 admin http://covercove.com/2009/02/07/covercoves-back/ After a full year of not posting anything, CoverCove’s back.

To start this year off, I’ll be giving you h2bleu’s rendition of YouTube.

Cool voice, confused guitar? Personally liked the way he twisted the melody a bit (the high notes were replaced by rock-like notes).

Du-et This Christmas http://covercove.com/2007/12/08/du-et-this-christmas/ http://covercove.com/2007/12/08/du-et-this-christmas/#comments Sat, 08 Dec 2007 05:46:34 +0000 admin http://covercove.com/2007/12/08/du-et-this-christmas/ Well, this one’s not really a duet. But the team YouTube users Robbie and Stacy made by singing “This Christmas” (Donny Hathaway’s hit) should really be a head-turner for recording companies.

Enjoy.

Apart from the weird organ “mode”, I guess everything was really good. The singing was exceptional. Just slightly nasal for me, but I guess it’ll pass (I guess Stacy was just a bit shy).

Smells Like Roasting Nuts… http://covercove.com/2007/12/08/smells-like-roasting-nuts/ http://covercove.com/2007/12/08/smells-like-roasting-nuts/#comments Sat, 08 Dec 2007 05:37:57 +0000 admin http://covercove.com/2007/12/08/smells-like-roasting-nuts/ (That title actually came out wrong…)

Hearing the most-covered Christmas song ever (and again, I say I dunno because White Christmas might be the most-covered holiday song) might get a little boring especially when they just sing it for the sake of singing it. This time, YouTube user Guamojigga gives us his Bublè-ish version of “The Christmas Song”, and I’m happy to say that, in my opinion, he did a great job putting fun in the song.

Just take away the hotdog with marshmallow on it (it really looked weird), I say this is a pretty good act.

I Was Silenced http://covercove.com/2007/12/08/i-was-silenced/ http://covercove.com/2007/12/08/i-was-silenced/#comments Sat, 08 Dec 2007 05:29:09 +0000 admin http://covercove.com/2007/12/08/i-was-silenced/ After a week-long period of being busy with my day-job, it’s time to blog about Christmas covers again. This time, we see / hear Lana McKissack singing Silent Night.

She’s definitely cute. Hehe (*blushes*). Especially when she hit that poor silver christmas tree. But I thought the singing was just OK. She had the looks, and I guess she should’ve pushed the envelope when it comes to a song like this. It was so close from being boring.

As for how she poised in front of the camera, I don’t think she should’ve looked like heartbroken. Silent Night is a solemn song, and I was expecting her to at least feel the spirit of Christmas from within.

Anyway, just my opinion.

I hope y’all enjoy this one (there was a hint of David Choi smiling here, but a bit blurry, though).

David Choi does this Christmas Caroling every weekday, which started last week. Just check out his YouTube Channel every weekday.
